Design competition “Futura – The School for Tomorrow’s Italy,” within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan – winning project

The project concerns the demolition and reconstruction of the school complex in La Lucca area.
The competition-winning proposal reverses the pre-existing settlement condition: the new volumes are arranged along the perimeter of the lot, to delimit the space of a garden, which is the center of the school.
The design development and discussion with the school management introduced some changes in the distribution of the rooms.
The kindergarten is in the single-story building. Three classrooms, alongside a multipurpose room, extend outdoors protected by a common canopy. On the opposite front, the dining space also is suitable for workshop activities.
The primary school has an L-shaped development on two floors. In the center, the main staircase, which widens into a small cavea, is placed in a double-height volume to establish a strong connection between the two levels. The space of the staircase is the “square” of the school.
On the second floor, classrooms are joined two by two. A glass window to the common space makes them permeable to school life.
On the ground floor, the cafeteria is a large multipurpose room, open to the staircase and to the garden. At the opposite end, facing the entrance, the library unites the primary school with the kindergarten.
The garden is the heart of the new complex. It is directly connected to the classroom floor by an external staircase. It will be used by all, for outdoor educational activities and as an extension of the library and dining spaces.
The layout of the rooms tends to give a more public character to the ground floor of the primary school: the library, classrooms-laboratory and multi-purpose space of the cafeteria will be able to be used beyond school hours.
